Who’s in the driver’s seat?
How six AI answer engines recommend car brands, and which brands are winning the new recommendation economy. The answer engines have already picked their favourites: Toyota and Lexus together take the #1 slot in 46 of every 100 answers.
By Pete Blackshaw and Hank HudepohlBrandRank.AI Research·Data 1–31 October 2026
When an AI engine answers "which brands should I consider?", it hands back a ranked list. Recommendation Share scores where a brand lands on that list, not just whether it appears.
First place earns 10 points, tenth place earns 1. A brand's points across every answer are added up and divided by the most it could have earned. 100% would mean ranked first in every answer; 0% means never named.
55.2%
Toyota's Recommendation Share

Verse 1
Pulled off the interstate, phone up on the dash, Asked it for an SUV that wouldn't burn my cash. The engines handed back a list, ten names in a row, If your brand ain't on that shortlist, where's your buyer gonna go?
Pre-chorus
Toyota's riding shotgun, Lexus takes the wheel, Forty-six in every hundred get a number-one deal!
Chorus
Who's in the driver's seat? Who's winning the race? When AI makes the shortlist, who's taking first place? You can sell a million cars, have your name in lights, But if you don't make the answer, you're nowhere in sight!
Verse 2
Detroit sells four in ten, got the muscle and the pride, But just one in ten of the points on the recommendation side. Honda's on the list most days, but rarely number one, The race for recommendation has only just begun!
Pre-chorus
Tesla's top American, but tenth across the field, Five brands own seven in ten of the first-place wins they yield!
Chorus
Who's in the driver's seat? Who's winning the race? When AI makes the shortlist, who's taking first place? You can sell a million cars, have your name in lights, But if you don't make the answer, you're nowhere in sight!
Bridge
Ask about the service, watch the order rearrange, Lexus passes Toyota, Porsche is gaining range. Forty-four brands barely touch that number-one spot, The road to being recommended is tougher than you thought!
Final chorus
Who's in the driver's seat? Who's winning the race? When AI makes the shortlist, who's taking first place? The showroom's moving, and the future's coming fast, The brands that earn the answer are the brands built to last!
Outro
Know the truth!
The word for 2026
Named is not chosen.
Three findings from 25,800 AI answers. Recommendation Share is the headline number: who the answer engines put first when a buyer asks which car to consider, and how far that sits from who sells the most.
Mention share
69%
Honda appears in more than two-thirds of answers.
It is one of the most consistently mentioned brands in the Index: named in 69 of every 100 ranked lists.
First-place share
1.9%
But it is ranked first in fewer than 2%.
A brand can be highly visible without being the recommendation that wins. Every #1 slot Honda does not take goes to a competitor.
01 — The gap
Detroit sells the cars. The answer engines recommend someone else's.
Detroit 3 brands (Ford, GM and Stellantis's American marques) account for 38 of every 100 new vehicles sold in the US. Of every 100 points the answer engines awarded across all brands, Detroit brands earned 11.
Japanese brands earned 48 of every 100 points on 37 of every 100 sales.
No Detroit brand makes the top ten; Tesla is the highest-ranked American brand, at tenth.
Answer-to-market ratio: Lexus earns 4.5× its market share in the answer, Ford 0.25×, Chevrolet 0.16×, Jeep 0.05×.
Why it mattersOnly about half of car buyers stay with their brand when they buy again (51%1), and more than half say they plan to choose a different brand next time (53%2). So roughly half the market is up for grabs at every purchase, and the answer engines are already steering that choice toward the brands they rate highest.

02 — Mentions vs. recommendations
Honda is everywhere, rarely first.
Honda appears in 69% of answers, second only to Toyota, and is ranked first in 1.9% of them. Mentions are inflationary; recommendations are conserved.
BMW is named in 58% of answers and ranked first in 2.5%; Hyundai 51% and 2.8%; Kia 40% and 0.7%; Acura 31% and 0.1%.
When a brand is named, how often is it ranked #1? Toyota 35% of the time, Lexus 29%, Tesla 26%, Porsche 24%, against Honda 3%, Kia 2% and Acura 0.4%.
Why it mattersEvery AI-visibility tool on the market counts the mention. Only the recommendation moves the sale. A brand can be the safe inclusion in two-thirds of answers and still lose the shortlist.

03 — The service verdict
Ask about service and the leader changes.
On the 41 questions about dealers, repairs, warranties and recalls, Lexus overtakes Toyota, 57.8% to 50.7%. Porsche gains 10 points and is ranked first more often than any other brand.
Gainers: Infiniti +10.1, Porsche +9.9, MINI +9.3, Subaru +8.0 points.
Fallers: Genesis −6.9 (its share halves), BMW −6.8, Mazda −5.5, Hyundai −5.5, Audi −5.4.
Audi finishes 24th of the 46 brands named in the service cut, with zero #1 placements across 7,052 service answers.
Why it mattersThe answer engines hold a separate opinion about how a brand behaves after the sale, and it is the opinion a buyer hears when they ask who will stand behind the car.

Key insight
The shortlist is short. 71 of every 100 AI answers put one of five brands first: Toyota, Lexus, Porsche, Tesla or Subaru. 44 of the 57 brands are ranked first in fewer than one answer in 100.

The leaderboard
How the brands stack up.
Recommendation Share™ is position-weighted: a #1 placement earns 10 points, a #10 placement earns 1, and the total is divided by the maximum possible. Answer-to-market is the brand's share of all points the answer engines awarded divided by its share of 2025 US sales. Bar colour fades with the score and is a reading aid, not a tested tier. Close scores, such as Toyota's 55.2% and Lexus's 52.7%, are close observed scores: this release does not claim statistical significance, tested ties or ±1-point precision.
15 of 57 brandsBrands with fewer than 100 appearances are flagged low confidence, a reporting threshold rather than a confidence interval. Answer-to-market shown where 2025 sales share is on record.

Short, citable answers to the questions buyers, analysts and answer engines ask about this edition.
What is Recommendation Share?
Recommendation Share is a position-weighted measure of how strongly AI answer engines recommend a brand. A brand earns 10 points for ranking first in an answer list and 1 point for ranking tenth; its points are summed and divided by the maximum possible score, so a brand ranked first in every answer would score 100%.
Which car brand do AI answer engines recommend most?
Toyota. In the October 2026 edition Toyota has the highest Recommendation Share at 55.2%, followed by Lexus (52.7%), Honda (44.2%), Subaru (38.5%) and Porsche (32.5%). BMW, Mazda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Tesla complete the top ten.
How often do Toyota and Lexus take the #1 spot?
Together they rank first in 46 of every 100 answer lists: Toyota in 25.9% and Lexus in 19.8% of the 25,800 lists. Five brands (Toyota, Lexus, Porsche, Tesla and Subaru) take 71 of every 100 first places, and 44 of the 57 brands rank first in less than 1% of lists.
How do Detroit brands perform in AI answers?
Ford, General Motors and Stellantis brands account for 38 of every 100 US vehicle sales in 2025 but earn 11 of every 100 points the answer engines award. Tesla, ranked 10th, is the highest-ranked American brand. Ford earns 0.25 times its share of sales in points, Chevrolet 0.16 times and Jeep 0.05 times.
Is being named the same as being recommended?
No. Honda is named in 68.7% of answer lists, second only to Toyota, but ranks first in just 1.9% of them. Recommendation Share rewards position, so a brand that is mentioned often but rarely ranked first scores below its visibility.
What changes when the question is about service?
On 41 customer-service questions, Lexus (57.8%) moves ahead of Toyota (50.7%), and Porsche ranks first in 21.4% of service answers, more than any other brand. Audi places 24th of 46 brands on service and is never ranked first.
Which answer engines and questions does the Index cover?
Six answer engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok) were asked the same 150 unbranded car-shopping questions between 1 and 31 October 2026, producing 25,800 answer lists and 237,986 ranked brand appearances across 57 brands.
Is the Index a survey of car buyers?
No. It is a directional snapshot of what publicly available AI answer engines said in response to a fixed set of questions in a stated window. It is not a customer survey and not a measure of vehicle quality. The questions likely favour established brands, and brand classification was AI-assisted.
Methodology & limitations
Read this as perception, not performance.
The Index measures what six publicly available AI answer engines said in response to a fixed set of questions in a stated window. It is not a customer survey and not a measure of vehicle quality. Everything below is what a reader needs to challenge the numbers, and it is longer than feels necessary on purpose.
01
What was asked
BrandRank.AI asked six AI answer engines 150 unbranded questions about car brands daily from 1 to 31 October 2026. The answer engines were ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok. Any question that named a specific brand was removed. The question set is the same as September's.
02
Themes
Vehicle quality and build, long-term reliability and durability, safety and recalls, performance and engineering, in-car technology and software, buying and dealership experience, warranty and transparency, and luxury versus mainstream value.
03
Answer lists
Each answer list is one question, asked of one answer engine on one day: 25,800 answer lists, which produced 237,986 ranked brand appearances across 57 car brands. A customer-service cut uses 41 of the questions and covers 7,052 answer lists.
04
Recommendation Share
Position-weighted. A brand earns 10 points for ranking first in a list and 1 point for ranking tenth. Its points are summed and divided by the maximum possible score. A brand ranked first in every answer would have 100%. Where this report says a group "earned X of every 100 points", it means that group's points as a share of all points the answer engines awarded across the 57 brands in the wave.
05
Top 10 Mention Share
The percentage of answer lists that name the brand anywhere in the top 10.
06
Name merging
Name variants, model names and sub-brand mentions are merged into one brand: Honda Civic counts as Honda, Lexus GX as Lexus. Combined entries are credited to the first-named brand, so "Honda / Acura" counts as Honda. A brand named more than once in one list is counted once, at its best position.
07
Who is ranked
Automakers and vehicle marques that sell new vehicles to consumers. The study excludes dealers, used-car retailers, review sites, non-automotive brands, and parent groups such as General Motors and Stellantis. Names appearing in fewer than 0.1% of lists were not classified and are left out.
08
Coverage and confidence
29 brands appear more than 1,000 times and 50 more than 100; every top-10 brand appears more than 8,000 times. Brands with fewer than 100 appearances are flagged low confidence. This is a reporting threshold, not a validated confidence interval.
09
What is not claimed
Repeated questions and answers across days and answer engines may be correlated, so answer-list and appearance counts are not independent observations. This release does not claim statistical significance, tested ties or ±1-point precision. Close scores are reported as close observed scores.
10
What it measures
A directional snapshot of AI answer engine responses, not a customer survey or a measure of vehicle quality. The questions are not tied to any country in wording and lean toward reliability, trust and after-sale support over price or performance. This likely favours established brands with strong reputations for dependability and dealer consistency, and likely disfavours newer, direct-sales, low-volume or niche brands. Branded-prompt detection, brand classification, name merging and country tagging are AI-assisted. Results will change as the answer engines change.

Combined names
How merged and combined entries are treated
Name variants, model names and sub-brand mentions are merged into one brand: Honda Civic counts as Honda, Lexus GX as Lexus. Combined entries are credited to the first-named brand, so "Honda / Acura" counts as Honda and "Ford / Lincoln" as Ford. If one list names the same brand more than once, it is counted once, at its best position.
