AI's Most Recommended Holiday Gifts & Retailers

The BrandRank 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index℠
The gifts AI loves. The retailers it trusts. The brands it overlooks.

When a shopper asks AI what to give and where to buy it, which names come back? 160 single-answer questions and 10 open questions were served to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Meta. They cover gifts for everyone on the list, deals, apparel, electronics and toys, the store experience, digital and AI shopping, delivery, returns, trust, beauty, home and sustainability. The result is an AI-built holiday gift guide, and a map of who owns each moment of the season.

Executive Summary · The BrandRank 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index℠ · October 2026

AI knows where to shop. It can't agree on what to give.

Six AI engines answered 170 holiday shopping questions. On retailer questions, four or more engines named the same answer 65% of the time. On product questions, just 31%, and only one product question was unanimous. The retailers are decided. The gifts are up for grabs. And beneath the rankings sits a second story: AI judges customer service by return policies, credits people over automation, and still names Amazon as the store built for AI agents.

Five Discoveries
What 950 AI answers reveal about the 2026 holiday season
Customer Service Spotlight
AI judges service by returns, credits people, and overlooks AI-powered support.

Across the eight core customer service questions, Nordstrom takes 25 of 48 first-place answers. Amazon, the most-recommended name in the study, takes one. In 72 service rationales the word "return" appears 28 times; AI and chat never appear. These are AI's descriptions of service, not measurements of how retailers actually perform.

ChatGPT
The Current Catalog
ANSWER BIAS: AMAZON · NORDSTROM · TARGET · LATEST MODELS
How It Thinks

ChatGPT names the newest product generations in the study (AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch Series 11, LG C5 OLED, Garmin Instinct 3) and sides with the plurality answer more often than any other engine. Its retailer answers split almost evenly between Amazon, Nordstrom and Target. Its open answers are compact and practical: compare total cost, warranty and lifespan, not the promotional price.

What It Values
Current product generations
Service-led department stores (Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack)
Gift specialists (Harry & David for delivery and wrap)
Durability guarantees (Patagonia, Osprey)
Value incumbents for deals (Walmart, Costco)
Signature Answer Pattern

Only engine to name Kohl’s for the longest holiday return window, Compartés chocolate for coworkers, Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee as the best warranty, Instant Vortex for air fryers and Harry & David for both direct-to-recipient delivery and gift wrap.

Blind Spots & Vulnerabilities

Steps outside the retail frame three times: UPS for the most reliable holiday delivery and FedEx for flexible delivery options (both carriers, not retailers), and Toyota as the most durable consumer brand. It also suggests LEGO Friends, a line aimed at younger children, for teenage girls.

Claude
The Trend Reader
ANSWER BIAS: AMAZON · NORDSTROM · TARGET · CULTURAL MOMENTS
How It Thinks

Claude gives the widest spread of picks in the study (98 distinct across 160) and reads the culture: Pop Mart Labubu as the toy of the season, Sol de Janeiro for teenage girls, a Cartier Love Bracelet for luxury, Oura Ring 4 for someone who has everything. It also names current generations (MacBook Air M4, Garmin Venu 4, JBL Flip 7). It is the only engine to credit a live chat-checkout partner for agent purchases.

What It Values
Viral and collectible gifts
Current product generations
Independent specialists (Uncommon Goods, Balsam Hill, Darn Tough)
Agentic-commerce partnerships (Etsy, Walmart)
Costco for trust and satisfaction
Signature Answer Pattern

Only engine to name Etsy as the best retailer for letting an AI agent complete a purchase (citing ChatGPT checkout), Hallmark as the brand that best captures the holiday spirit, Balsam Hill for decorations, Lands’ End for online fit tools and TJ Maxx as the alternative to department stores.

Blind Spots & Vulnerabilities

Its trend picks are the most time-sensitive in the study: Labubu and Sol de Janeiro reflect a social moment that can turn before December. With 34 picks no other engine shares, a brand that wins in Claude may be invisible elsewhere.

Gemini
The Superlative Salesman
ANSWER BIAS: AMAZON · TARGET · BEST BUY · LAST YEAR’S MODELS
How It Thinks

Gemini names Amazon first more than any other engine (26 times) and never names Walmart first at all. Its rationales are the most promotional in the study, built on words like undisputed, ultimate and incredibly. It hands Amazon nearly every gift-logistics question: delivery to the recipient, gift wrap, flexible delivery, convenient returns and in-store returns.

What It Values
Amazon logistics end to end
Target’s Drive Up and app
Hero products (AirPods Max, Dyson V15)
Zappos for service and complaints
Dermatologist brands (CeraVe)
Signature Answer Pattern

Only engine to name AirPods Max as the most popular gift, a Dyson V15 vacuum as the luxury gift, Bitzee as the toy of the season, Carhartt for men’s value, Express for party outfits, Home Depot for decorations and a Pela compostable phone case as the eco gift.

Blind Spots & Vulnerabilities

The most dated product knowledge in the study: Apple Watch Series 9, LG C3 OLED, MacBook Air M2, Oura Ring Gen 3 and JBL Flip 6, where other engines name newer generations. Its superlatives read like marketing copy, so a brand’s own claims can come back as fact.

Grok
The Confident Shortcut
ANSWER BIAS: AMAZON · NORDSTROM · TARGET · TERSE VERDICTS
How It Thinks

Grok’s rationales are short and decisive, and it agrees with the plurality answer often, second only to ChatGPT. It is Nordstrom’s strongest backer after Perplexity, naming it for the best holiday return policy, the longest return window and gift receipts. It favors premium hobby gear and experiences over objects.

What It Values
Nordstrom for returns and service
Amazon for speed (same-day, app, free returns)
Premium hobby gear (Traeger, Breville, Herman Miller)
Experience gifts (Virgin Experience Gifts)
Value challengers (TCL, New Balance)
Signature Answer Pattern

Only engine to name a Traeger grill for fathers, Toniebox for toddlers, Skims for loungewear, Kay Jewelers for jewelry, a Roomba for new homeowners, West Elm for furnishings and Grove Collaborative for sustainable packaging.

Blind Spots & Vulnerabilities

Contains the study’s clearest price errors: a Kindle Paperwhite “well under fifty” on sale (Q20) and Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones in the hundred-dollar range (Q21). Names Affirm and Wirecutter for retailer questions, and AirPods Pro 2 and Apple Watch Series 10 where others name newer models.

Perplexity
The Cited Skeptic
ANSWER BIAS: NORDSTROM · AMAZON · TARGET · COSTCO · DECLINES
How It Thinks

Perplexity is the only engine that cites sources inline (Nordstrom and Costco policy pages, Patagonia, PwC, Wirecutter) and the only one that declines: 10 NO ANSWERs where it judged no winner could be verified. Nordstrom is its most-named entity (20), usually backed by the same returns page. It names Amazon just 11 times, less than half Gemini’s count, and never names an Apple product.

What It Values
Verifiable policy pages
Practical utility gifts (Thermapen, OXO, Lodge, West Paw)
Personal keepsakes (Artifact Uprising photo book)
Resale (Patagonia Worn Wear, eBay)
Survey data for open answers (PwC, Basis)
Signature Answer Pattern

Only engine to name Net-a-Porter for designer safety, Johnstons of Elgin for sweaters, Vanicream for sensitive skin, a DoorDash gift card for new parents and Walmart’s Sparky as the most helpful AI shopping assistant. It declines the most popular gift, the toy of the season and agent-completed purchases.

Blind Spots & Vulnerabilities

Its picks are the most concentrated (75 distinct) and the most page-dependent: a retailer with one clear, citable policy page can win several questions, and one without it can drop out. Every decline hands that answer to the other five engines.

Meta
The Generic Gifter
ANSWER BIAS: AMAZON · TARGET · NIKE · CATEGORY ANSWERS
How It Thinks

Meta gives the most picks no other engine shares (48) and the least specific ones: “LEGO Sets,” “Digital Photo Frame,” “Experience Gift Card,” “Potted Plant.” It reaches for prestige labels the others skip (Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Blue Nile, Miele, Talbots), and its open answers are one-line generalities.

What It Values
Category-level answers
Prestige labels
The Amazon ecosystem (Echo Show, Alexa)
Value hardware (Xiaomi, B&H Photo)
Nike across sneakers and teen apparel
Signature Answer Pattern

The only engine whose answer for Amazon’s shopping assistant (Alexa) matches Amazon’s current Alexa for Shopping; the others still say Rufus. Only engine to name an Amazon Echo Show for women, Meta Quest 3 as the most popular gift, a Starbucks gift card for coworkers, Squishmallows as the toy of the season, Tile Mate under $50, Miele for durability and Package Free for sustainable packaging.

Blind Spots & Vulnerabilities

Answers outside the retailer frame (Affirm, DoorDash, Google Shopping) and lists “Lovely” as a preschool toy, apparently meaning Lovevery. Its product generations lag (MacBook Air M2, Garmin Venu 3, JBL Flip 6).

AI Judges Service by Returns, Credits People, and Overlooks AI-Powered Support.

Nordstrom owns the service desk: 25 of 48 answers on the eight core service questions, unanimous on customer service (Q86) and the department store experience (Q80). Costco owns satisfaction, unanimous on Q138. Zappos is the challenger, favored by Gemini and Meta for online support, refunds and complaints. Amazon, the most-named entity in the study, gets one core service answer out of 48. And across all 72 service rationales the word "return" appears 28 times, while AI or chat never appears at all.

Five Readings of the Data
1 · To AI, service means returns

Asked who has the best customer service, engines answer with return policies. “Return” appears 28 times in the 72 service rationales. Perplexity justifies every Nordstrom service win with the same free-returns page. Service is judged by what is written down and citable, not by what a shopper experiences at the counter.

2 · People still win the answer

When engines describe service beyond policy, they describe people: “attentive associates” (ChatGPT), “staff empowered to resolve issues quickly” (Claude), “responsive human support” (Grok), “human-centric support” (Meta). Empowerment is the most-repeated idea. AI rewards front-line authority it can read about.

3 · Amazon wins the screen, not the service desk

Amazon takes 43% of Digital & AI Shopping answers and 41% of Delivery answers, but 1 of 48 core service answers: Claude's pick for refunds, on speed. AI credits Amazon for removing the need for service, not for providing it.

4 · Zappos is a legacy that still splits the engines

Zappos takes 7 core service answers, all on support, refunds and complaints, from Gemini, Meta and Claude. The proof points engines repeat are 24/7 reps and empowered staff. A reputation built a decade ago is still doing work in AI, which shows how long a service story lasts once it is widely told.

5 · Nobody owns AI-powered service

The AI-assistant question (Q107) goes to Amazon, but as a shopping helper. In the service questions, no engine mentions AI, chat or automation even once. The first retailer to show, with citable evidence, that its AI resolves problems as well as its people do has an open lane.

What the engines say shoppers fear

In the open answers, the biggest frustration is uncertainty: late delivery, empty shelves, the wrong size. Three engines say Amazon fixes it, two say Target, and Perplexity says Nordstrom, for free store and mail returns. Service is being redefined as certainty, before the shopper ever has to ask for help.

B · Why Service Shapes the Answer Economy
BrandRank interpretation, built on the study's findings
BrandRank interpretation
Service is now part of the recommendation

When a shopper asks AI where to buy, the engines weigh certainty: delivery, returns and the chance of getting help. In this study, retailers credited for service (Nordstrom, Costco, Zappos) are credited through returns, guarantees and empowered staff. A service reputation that AI can read becomes part of the reason a retailer is recommended at all.

BrandRank interpretation
What is written down is what counts

Engines cite policies, satisfaction surveys and widely told service stories. They cannot see a good phone call or a resolved complaint unless someone has published it. That makes complaint handling, return terms and customer satisfaction evidence into content, and content into Answer Share.

Perspectives for Brands
Drawn from the data · framed for the holiday peak
“Your return policy is your service reputation.”

Engines answer service questions with return terms. Exact, dated, machine-readable policies (windows, gift receipts, exceptions) are the most direct way into a service answer.

Data: Q86, Q106, Q127 · Perplexity citations
“Write down what your people can do.”

Empowered staff is the most-repeated service idea, and AI only knows it when it is published. Specific stories of front-line authority are citable proof.

Data: Rationales on Q86, Q106, Q127, Q136
“Claim AI-powered service before someone else does.”

No engine credits any retailer for AI that resolves problems. The first brand with evidence that its AI fixes issues, not just answers questions, owns an empty lane.

Data: Service rationales · Q107
“Satisfaction needs a scoreboard.”

Costco wins satisfaction unanimously because engines can point to surveys. Third-party, repeatable satisfaction evidence beats self-description.

Data: Q92, Q138
“Ask AI what happens when it goes wrong.”

A brand that wins product questions can still lose the complaint question. Test the answers shoppers get about returns, refunds and complaints, not just recommendations.

Data: Q127, Q136
“Measure service at the peak.”

December is when service reputations are made. Re-running these questions after the holidays shows whether the season moved the answer.

C · Accuracy & Trust
Every flagged answer across 960 responses
Accuracy Watch · Vulnerability Signals
AI does not just choose between brands; it describes them. This tab lists every answer BrandRank flagged across the 960 responses: retired names (Amazon's Rufus, renamed Alexa for Shopping in May 2026), older product generations where another engine named a newer one, price claims that don't hold, answers outside the question's frame (a carrier for a retailer question), generic non-answers and fit issues. For a brand, each of these is a moment where AI is recommending something it shouldn't, or recommending it for the wrong reason.
Verified errors

Checkable against the record: a retired name (Rufus, renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026), price claims that don't hold, and non-retailers given for retailer questions.

Comparative flags

Older generations, judged against the newest generation another engine named in this study, not against a retail catalog. Likely outdated, worth checking.

Judgment flags

Generic answers that name a category instead of a product, and fit concerns for the stated recipient. BrandRank's judgment, not a factual error.

Every Flagged Answer
#QuestionEngineAnswerFlag
Version drift is the biggest risk

The same product line appears in three generations across engines: Apple Watch Series 9, 10 and 11; AirPods Pro 2 and 3; MacBook Air M2 and M4; JBL Flip 6 and 7. Gemini and Meta lag most often. A shopper who follows the older answer may buy last year's model at this year's price, or look for one that is no longer sold.

What brands can do

Publish one clear, dated statement of the current lineup and holiday pricing; keep retired models clearly marked; name sub-brands consistently. Declines matter too: Perplexity skipped 10 questions where it found no verifiable answer, and each one is an opening for the brand with the most citable proof.

BrandRank interpretation
Why a wrong answer can sound right

Every answer in this study arrives in the same confident format: one pick, one tidy rationale. The format does not change when the model is a generation behind, the price is wrong or the name was retired months ago. Engines repeat what is most widely written, and older facts have had more time to spread. Without a clear, current, citable source, a brand's correction loses to its own history.

D · Agentic Shopping & the Future of Service
Q93–Q108 and open question 5
Agentic Shopping Lens · Analysis & Perspective
A focused read of the 16 Digital & AI Shopping questions (Q93–Q108) and the engines' own view of how AI is changing gift buying (open question 5). The numbers come from the study; the perspective is BrandRank's interpretation of what it means for retailers preparing for agent-led shopping.
The headline

AI names Amazon as the store built for AI, and it is the one retailer that has fought hardest to control which agents may shop there.

Amazon takes 40 of the 94 Digital & AI Shopping answers. Four engines say it is the easiest retailer to shop through an AI assistant (Q94) and the best for letting an AI agent complete a purchase (Q108), citing its catalog, APIs, payments and fulfillment. Yet in November 2025 Amazon sued Perplexity to stop its Comet browser agent from buying on Amazon's site, and it has folded its own agents into Alexa for Shopping, which replaced the Rufus assistant in May 2026. Four engines still call that assistant Rufus. The retailers with live chat-checkout partnerships are barely visible: only Claude names Etsy for agent purchases, and only Claude and Perplexity credit Walmart for AI-assistant shopping.

The Digital & AI Shopping Grid
Q93–Q108 · every engine's answer
Five Readings of the Data
1 · Infrastructure is mistaken for openness

Engines justify Amazon on agent questions with the same reasons they give for online shopping in general: structured catalog, saved payments, mature fulfillment. None mentions whether Amazon actually lets outside agents transact. AI is answering "who is most capable," not "who will let my agent in."

2 · The partnerships that exist are hard to see

Etsy and Walmart moved early on chat checkout, yet four engines don't connect either to AI shopping. Claude credits both; Perplexity credits Walmart and names Sparky. A retailer's agentic strategy has to be visible in the sources engines read, not just in press releases.

3 · AI still calls it Rufus

Asked for the most helpful AI shopping assistant (Q107), five engines name Amazon, and four of them call it Rufus, a name Amazon retired on May 13, 2026, when it launched Alexa for Shopping. Five months later, only Meta's answer (Alexa) is close to current. The only other assistant named anywhere in the study is Walmart's Sparky, by Perplexity. If Amazon's own rename hasn't reached AI, a smaller retailer's will take deliberate work.

4 · The engine on the other side of the lawsuit abstains

Perplexity, the company Amazon sued over agent shopping, is the one engine that names no winner for agent purchases, and it names Amazon first just 11 times across the study, against 26 for Gemini. The data cannot say why, but it shows how much an engine's own position in the market can coincide with what it recommends.

5 · Product data is the new shelf

The content questions have clear owners: Best Buy for comparison tools (6/6), REI for product descriptions (5/6), ASOS for apparel filters (4/6). Claude says it plainly in its open answer: competition shifts toward accurate product data, strong reviews and being recommended by the assistant itself.

What the engines say about AI shopping

All six agree assistants now turn vague intentions into shortlists. Perplexity adds the only data point: 29% of shoppers plan to use AI somewhere in their holiday shopping, but only 4% expect to buy through an AI tool (PwC, as cited). The research phase has moved to AI; checkout is next.

Perspectives for Retailers
Drawn from the data · framed for the 2026 season
“Publish the rules of agent checkout.”

Engines credit retailers with agent-readiness on infrastructure alone. A retailer that states plainly which agents can transact, and how, gives AI something true to repeat.

Data: Q94, Q108 · Lens readings 1–2
“Make the return policy machine-readable.”

Nordstrom and Costco win returns questions on the strength of clear, citable policy pages. Exact holiday windows, gift-receipt terms and exceptions turn a policy into an answer.

Data: Q119–Q128 · Perplexity citations
“Rename on purpose, then prove it.”

Amazon renamed Rufus to Alexa for Shopping in May 2026, and four of six engines still say Rufus. Renames and new assistants need a trail of widely cited sources before AI repeats them.

Data: Q107
“Win the shortlist, not the funnel.”

The engines say AI now turns intentions into shortlists, and that competition shifts to product data, reviews and being recommended. The gift questions are the least settled and the most open.

Data: Open questions 1 and 5 · Gift Guide
“Fix the version before December.”

Older generations and wrong prices show up in four of six engines. One current, dated lineup and holiday-price page per product line is the cheapest correction available.

Data: Accuracy Watch
“Measure now, then again after Cyber Monday.”

This study is a pre-season baseline. Re-running the same questions in December would show which brands moved into the answer during the season that matters most.

Data: All 170 prompts
Read with care. This study measures what AI engines say, not how retailers' agent programs actually perform. Context on the Amazon–Perplexity dispute and retailer chat-checkout partnerships comes from public reporting, not from the engines.
BrandRank interpretation · extends beyond the study's questions
From recommendation to resolution

The study's agentic questions are about buying. The service questions are about what happens after. Put together, they leave an open question: when an AI agent buys the gift, who handles the wrong size, the late delivery or the refund? Today engines credit Amazon for agent-ready infrastructure and credit people at Nordstrom and Zappos for service, and no engine connects the two. The retailer that can show agents and service working together will have a story no engine is telling yet.

Read with care. Twelve questions and six engines make this a directional read. It measures what AI says about service, not how retailers' service actually performs. A study built only on service moments (holiday peak support, contact channels, escalation, AI chat versus people) would turn this lens into its own index.
Draft for review. The quotes from Pete Blackshaw and Hank Hudepohl are proposed and need their approval before release. The release date, report link and media contact are left in brackets to fill in.

AI Knows Where to Shop but Can't Agree on What to Give, BrandRank Holiday Study Finds

The BrandRank 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index℠ tested 170 holiday shopping questions across six AI engines. Amazon, Target and Nordstrom dominate retailer recommendations, the engines split sharply on gifts, and AI judges customer service largely by return policies.

CINCINNATI, October [XX], 2026 — As more shoppers ask AI assistants what to buy and where to buy it, a new study from BrandRank.AI finds that the leading AI engines largely agree on where to shop but disagree sharply on what to give.

The BrandRank 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index℠, titled AI's Most Recommended Holiday Gifts & Retailers, put 160 single-answer questions and 10 open questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Meta. The questions covered gifts for everyone on the list, deals, apparel, electronics and toys, the store experience, digital and AI shopping, delivery, returns, trust, beauty, home and sustainability. The study scored 950 answers.

Key findings

  • The consensus gap. Four or more of the six engines named the same answer on 65% of questions about which retailer to use, but on only 31% of questions about which product to buy. Just one product question drew a unanimous answer: the Amazon Fire HD Kids tablet.
  • Three retailers dominate. Amazon was named first 125 times out of 950, followed by Target (78) and Nordstrom (72). Each owns a different moment: Amazon the online experience, Target the store and pickup, Nordstrom service and returns.
  • The hardest people to shop for. The best gifts for mothers, fathers, coworkers, under $25 and luxury gifts over $250 each drew six different answers from six engines.
  • Customer service is judged by returns. On eight core customer service questions, Nordstrom received 25 of 48 first-place answers; Amazon received one. The word "return" appeared 28 times in the engines' 72 service rationales, while AI and chat were never mentioned.
  • The engines see different worlds. Gemini never named Walmart first. Perplexity named Nordstrom 20 times and Amazon 11 times; Gemini named Amazon 26 times.
  • Agents and accuracy. Four engines named Amazon the best retailer for letting an AI agent complete a purchase, and four still called Amazon's shopping assistant Rufus, a name Amazon retired in May 2026 when it launched Alexa for Shopping. BrandRank flagged 33 answers for outdated products, inaccurate prices or answers outside the question.

"Holiday shopping now starts with a question, and AI is answering it. The engines have largely made up their minds about where to shop, but the gift itself is still wide open. That's the most valuable shelf space of the season, and most brands don't know whether they're on it. What surprised us most was customer service. AI reads return policies and service stories to decide who deserves the recommendation. Service has become brand equity inside the answer."

Pete Blackshaw, Co-founder and CEO, BrandRank.AI, and author of The Answer Economy

"Every AI engine sees the market a little differently. A brand that leads in one engine can be nearly invisible in another, which is why we measure both the blended verdict and each engine on its own. And as AI agents begin completing purchases for shoppers, the questions get harder: which brands does the agent trust, and who helps the customer when something goes wrong? Brands need to know what AI is saying about them before an agent acts on it."

BrandRank ran an identical protocol on six AI engines in October 2026. For each of 160 questions, engines named exactly one retailer, brand or product with a rationale of 15 words or fewer, and could decline to answer; Perplexity declined 10 questions, leaving 950 scored answers out of 960. Answers were normalized by product family and by parent brand. Ten additional open questions captured each engine's perspective on the season. Results reflect what AI engines say as of October 2026; they are not product tests or measurements of retailer performance.

Methodology

An identical protocol of 160 single-answer and 10 open questions about the 2026 US holiday season was run on six AI engines in October 2026: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Meta. For each single-answer question, engines named exactly one retailer, brand or product with a rationale of 15 words or fewer, and could answer NO ANSWER. Answer Share counts these picks: 950 scored answers out of 960, after 10 NO ANSWERs from Perplexity. Each engine's response was scored once. Names were normalized at two levels: picks by product family for consensus (AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 → Apple AirPods Pro; Hoka Bondi 9 and HOKA Bondi 9 → Hoka Bondi), and entities by owner for Answer Share (Kindle, Fire HD and Ring → Amazon; Nordstrom Rack and Nordy Club → Nordstrom; Soundcore → Anker; Theragun → Therabody; the Apple Store → Apple). Older-generation flags compare against the newest generation another engine named in the same study, not against a retail catalog. Context on agentic commerce draws on public reporting. Results reflect AI answer patterns as of October 2026 and are intended for brand intelligence, not shopping advice.

Quick answers from the index

Which retailer do AI engines recommend most for holiday shopping in 2026?

Amazon. In the BrandRank 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index, Amazon was named first in 125 of 950 scored answers, followed by Target (78) and Nordstrom (72). Each owns a different moment: Amazon the online experience, Target the store and pickup, Nordstrom service and returns.

Do AI engines agree on which holiday gifts to buy?

Rarely. Four or more of the six engines named the same answer on 65% of questions about which retailer to use, but on only 31% of questions about which product to buy. Just one product question drew a unanimous answer: the Amazon Fire HD Kids tablet, for the best tablet for children.

Which retailer do AI engines rate best for customer service?

Nordstrom. On eight core customer service questions, Nordstrom received 25 of 48 first-place answers; Amazon received one. The word “return” appeared 28 times in the engines’ 72 service rationales, while AI and chat were never mentioned.

Which store do AI engines say is best for an AI agent to buy from?

Amazon. Four engines named Amazon the best retailer for letting an AI agent complete a purchase, and four still called Amazon’s shopping assistant Rufus, a name Amazon retired in May 2026 when it launched Alexa for Shopping. BrandRank flagged 33 answers for outdated products, inaccurate prices or answers outside the question.

How was the 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index conducted?

BrandRank ran an identical protocol on six AI engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Meta) in October 2026. For each of 160 questions, engines named exactly one retailer, brand or product with a rationale of 15 words or fewer, and could decline to answer. Perplexity declined 10 questions, leaving 950 scored answers out of 960. Ten additional open questions captured each engine’s view of the season. Results reflect what AI engines say, not product tests or measurements of retailer performance.

The 10 open questions: what the engines said

Each engine also answered ten open questions about the season. This is BrandRank’s synthesis of those answers; they are not scored.

Open question 1: How is holiday shopping different this year compared with past seasons?

AI is in the research phase, not the checkout phase

Every engine says this season is more digital, earlier and more price-sensitive, with AI assistants shaping the shortlist. Claude cites tariffs and inflation; Gemini cites economic pressure and earlier promotions. Perplexity is the only engine to put numbers on it, citing PwC: 29% plan to use AI somewhere in their holiday shopping, but only 4% expect to buy through an AI tool.

Where the engines agree: Shopping starts earlier, comparisons are constant and AI is now part of discovery.

Where they differ: ChatGPT says assistants already help manage carts, delivery and returns. Perplexity says research is changing much faster than checkout.

What it means for brands: The shortlist is decided before the cart. A brand that is not in the AI shortlist in November will not be in the basket in December.

Open question 2: What matters most to shoppers when deciding where to buy holiday gifts this year?

Certainty is the product

Asked what matters most, engines describe total value: fair price plus confidence that the gift arrives on time and can be returned. Gemini and Grok put fulfillment certainty first; Claude puts price and trust first; Perplexity adds shipping costs, reviews and meaningful gifts.

Where the engines agree: Delivery reliability and easy returns now sit beside price as the deciding factors.

Where they differ: Whether price or certainty comes first, and whether ‘meaningful’ belongs in the value equation at all.

What it means for brands: Return windows, delivery promises and pickup are product attributes. Retailers that state them clearly give AI something to cite.

Open question 3: Which brand or retailer best captures the spirit of the holidays, and why?

Nobody owns the spirit of the season

Three engines say Target best captures the holidays, for festive stores, designer collections and accessible prices. ChatGPT picks Patagonia for gifts that outlast the season, Claude picks Hallmark for movies, cards and ornaments, and Perplexity picks Etsy, labelling the choice subjective.

Each engine’s answer: ChatGPT: Patagonia; Claude: Hallmark; Gemini: Target; Grok: Target; Perplexity: Etsy; Meta: Target.

Where the engines agree: The spirit of the holidays is about connection and discovery, not spending.

Where they differ: Four different answers from six engines: Target, Patagonia, Hallmark, Etsy.

What it means for brands: The emotional territory is open. Target holds the in-store version; nobody holds it in digital.

Open question 4: What makes a holiday gift feel thoughtful rather than obligatory?

Thoughtful means specific

All six engines agree a thoughtful gift reflects a specific habit, need or memory, not a price. Each illustrates it with a product: an Ember mug for someone who reheats coffee (Gemini), an Aura frame for grandparents who miss photos (Grok), an Artifact Uprising photo book (Perplexity), an engraved Etsy gift (Claude).

Where the engines agree: Specific beats generic; listening shows in the choice.

Where they differ: Little disagreement. Meta’s answer is the only one without an example.

What it means for brands: Products described by the moment they solve get cited as the thoughtful choice. Use-case language is AI-ready language.

Open question 5: How are AI assistants changing the way people find and buy holiday gifts?

The engines describe the Answer Economy themselves

Every engine says AI turns broad intentions into curated shortlists. Claude goes furthest: competition shifts toward accurate product data, strong reviews and being recommended by the assistant itself. Claude and Perplexity cite Walmart’s ChatGPT experience; Gemini and Claude cite Amazon’s Rufus, a name Amazon retired in May 2026 when it became Alexa for Shopping.

Where the engines agree: Search is becoming a conversation, and the assistant does the narrowing.

Where they differ: How much to trust it: Perplexity tells shoppers to confirm specifications, sellers and totals before buying.

What it means for brands: If the assistant is the shelf, product data is the merchandising. This is the season’s clearest signal for AEO.

Open question 6: What is the biggest frustration of holiday shopping, and which retailer handles it best?

The frustration is uncertainty, and three retailers claim the fix

Engines agree the biggest frustration is not knowing: whether the gift arrives, is in stock, or fits. They split on who solves it. Amazon, for predictable delivery and accurate arrival dates (ChatGPT, Claude, Meta). Target, for store inventory and Drive Up (Gemini, Grok). Nordstrom, for free store and mail returns (Perplexity).

Each engine’s answer: ChatGPT: Amazon; Claude: Amazon; Gemini: Target; Grok: Target; Perplexity: Nordstrom; Meta: Amazon.

Where the engines agree: Uncertainty, not price, is the pain point.

Where they differ: Delivery certainty (Amazon), pickup certainty (Target) or return certainty (Nordstrom).

What it means for brands: Each retailer is credited for one kind of certainty. The first to prove all three owns the answer.

Open question 7: How should shoppers balance getting a good deal with buying gifts that last?

Cost per use beats the sticker price

The engines converge on one rule: buy fewer, better gifts, and use sales to reach durable brands. They name the same proof points again and again: Le Creuset, Patagonia, LEGO, L.L.Bean and All-Clad.

Where the engines agree: Durability is value; discounts should buy quality, not volume.

Where they differ: Perplexity warns against equating quality with the most expensive option.

What it means for brands: Durability brands are being recommended in deal conversations. Longevity proof (warranties, repair programs) is a holiday sales asset.

Open question 8: Which holiday shopping traditions are fading, and which new ones are emerging?

The doorbuster is gone; the shortlist is the new tradition

Fading: pre-dawn Black Friday lines, the single-day rush, paper catalogs and mall wandering. Emerging: early online shopping, AI-built shortlists, resale gifting, experiences, pooled family gifts (Gemini) and TikTok-driven social shopping (Meta). Perplexity adds that stores still matter, citing PwC: 60% expect to buy gifts in-store.

Where the engines agree: The season has stretched into weeks and moved online.

Where they differ: How far the store is fading. Perplexity is the only engine with data that says: not very.

What it means for brands: The holiday season is now a series of AI-assisted research moments, not one weekend.

Open question 9: What does a shopper most need to trust before buying a holiday gift online?

Trust means knowing who you are buying from

Shoppers need to trust the seller, the authenticity of the product, the delivery promise and the return terms. Gemini singles out counterfeits as the most embarrassing gifting failure. Engines name Best Buy, Nordstrom, Costco and Amazon as retailers that honor those basics.

Where the engines agree: Seller identity and authenticity come first, then returns.

Where they differ: Marketplaces: Grok and Perplexity favor a brand’s own site or Nordstrom over unknown marketplace sellers.

What it means for brands: Clear ‘sold by’ labelling and authorized-seller status are trust signals AI repeats.

Open question 10: If you could give one piece of advice to a holiday shopper this year, what would it be?

Start early, set a budget, buy one good thing

Every engine gives the same advice: start early, set a budget, buy fewer and better gifts, and check return windows. Claude and Gemini add price trackers to avoid fake discounts. Perplexity adds a line no other engine does: use AI to narrow choices, not to replace checking the seller and the terms.

Where the engines agree: Plan early, spend deliberately, check returns.

Where they differ: Only Perplexity puts a limit on how far to trust AI.

What it means for brands: Brands that make their return terms and real prices easy to verify will survive the shopper’s final check.
